The first thing you notice when you walk into Izakaya MAI is the warm,
welcoming atmosphere Ito-san has created for his customers. It is a great
place to meet
with friends and catch up with them while enjoying variety of small-plate appetizers and sake.
I think that one of the reasons why people keep going back to Izakaya
MAI is
its huge selection of Japanese Sake and Shochu. Also, Mai reminds me of
Izakaya restaurants in Japan.
It’s truly authentic and that’s another reason why Mai is so popular among
Japanese people.
I like Ito-san’s Grilled Shishamo and Crazy Horse Roll. On a chilly night, I like to finish my dinner
with Tonkotsu Ramen.
The at-home comfort he’s created not only with his food, but also with
his hospitality
is the very reason why I go back to Izakaya Mai. Whenever I visit MAI,
Ito-san is there to
not only satisfy my palate, but to be a great companion.

We are a company that wholesales and distributes fresh and frozen sea foods in Bay area.
We have been doing business with Mr. Ito of Izakaya Mai for quite a while.
He is a person of integrity and sincerity, a person with conviction.
Every time I visit his restaurant, I admire the fact that despite his vast selection
on his menu he never fails to be involved in preparing the rice and miso soup.
The rice and miso soup is basic and simple but it is also the most fundamental element
of the Japanese cuisine. It is an element that many Japanese chefs take for granted
and not value enough. When making his soup, he seems to move quickly but never fails
to lose his focus to make sure that the food he prepares is done correctly.
While working from behind the counter, he always seems to have a pulse on
everything that is going on in the restaurant. He seems to be in tune with the dishes
he has prepared as well as his customers at the same time, including those who are standing
and waiting outside.
The casual interior recalls memories from the past that brings back pleasant memories from afar.
Located on 2nd Avenue in San Mateo, Izakaya Mai is busy again with boisterous customers
until late at night. |

Izakaya Mai is known to be the most popular Japanese-style bar and
restaurant in San Mateo where you would feel at home whenever you stop by.
Familiar with its TV commercial that plays the jingle
”the fun Mai, the delicious Mai, everybody’s Mai and forever Mai,”
anyone is welcomed to hop in and you might even be humming
the song “Mai, Mai, Mai, Maaaai♪” before you realize!
The place is always full with its many customers so be prepared to wait for a table.
The owner Mr. Ito, always so friendly and cheerful, is there to serve you with
great food and conversation every day - something that makes your visit more fun and entertaining.
Some of my recommended dishes are gyoza (dumpling), hiyashi chuka (cold Chinese noodles),
champon, ramen and whole-grilled cuttlewish to name a few.
Their menu is so rich in variety that it is so hard to choose from |

"I have been a good(?) customer of Izakaya MAI-san for more than two years
since I started to live in San Mateo.
The reason why I favor the restaurant is not merely because its JUST IN TIME system
( You can order menus whenever you want and be served very quickly )-quite popular to
many Japanese restaurants, open until 12:00 am -very important to busy business person
and much sake drinker, but because very friendly atmosphere of the owner chef Ito-san,
his wife and all staff.
You can communicate them at any time by Japanese and English, especially
the Ito-san's hand made Sushi counter enables customers to visit the restaurant alone.
That is a very strong advantage/incentive for Bay Area Single like me.
The warm nurturance of the restaurant allows you to start communication
among customers.
Seeing is Believing !! Please take a visit to Izakaya MAI and enjoy food and life !" |
